Winning Both Worlds: Apriliana Nur Rahmawati on Manifesting Successful Motherhood and Career

Women go through many seasons in their lives. For most women, the season of motherhood is profoundly beautiful – where unconditional love upon embracing their bundle of joy looms the patience and happiness in their blossoming hearts. In the middle of the heart-warming bliss of stepping into their new role as a mother, there is the inevitable dilemma that most women should face: choosing either motherhood or a career. Fortunately, in this day and age, a workplace like Mitrais understands the challenges that modern women face and stands with them. Apriliana Nur Rahmawati is one of the nine-to-five moms who chose both worlds unapologetically with Mitrais. Let’s flip through her journey as a mother and a professional.

Career and Motherhood

Apriliana, or Ana for short, was a determined young woman who paved her career as a Junior Programmer in Mitrais nine years ago. The single developer loved her independence, her job, and the professional development opportunities that go along with it. While deep down, she always yearned for a family of her own. Ana was aware that her dream of being a mother and a professional programmer could only be achieved by having a great strategy to walk both. And Mitrais has the answer to that, so she did not have to choose between her two biggest dreams. Today, Ana is a proud mother of two cute toddlers and also living her career goal as a professional Analyst Programmer. Interestingly, because of her passion for programming, she nick-named her firstborn after the name of the data structure: “Array”.

Support System for Working Mothers

For a mother with dual positions like Ana, life could be overwhelming at times, but she understands that the battle is not hers alone to fight. Stretching herself too thin is never an option for her. To be the best in both roles, she found ways to delegate and lighten her load with the best support system.

Spouse and Schools

Ana credits her husband for his help and attentiveness in caring for their kids whenever she needs a helping hand. In addition to her spouse, the support system she relies on is her kids’ preschools. Ana shared, “My spouse and I decided not to use a nanny or assistant, and use preschool instead after careful considerations, along with our values and capability.” By getting the kids to learn and play at their preschools, it’s possible for Ana to remain calm, composed, and focused in fulfilling her duty as a developer during work time.

Ideal Workplace

Ana’s nine years with Mitrais is not a mere coincidence. She deliberately chose to work at the company because it is indeed an ideal workplace for a career woman and a mother like her – another support system she can count on. “We have clear time for COB and the company respects it. Based on my experience, I’ve never had any interruption after my COB, so I can reset my focus on my family. No distraction, no call, no extra work.” testified Ana.

She added, “I can really see that Mitrais backs up employees’ work-life balance that enables parents like us to do our duties with WFH flexibility. I personally always work from the office and meet colleagues face to face; it helps me focus. But for parents who have their own needs, being able to opt for WFH or WFO is an A+ thing.” revealed Ana.

Giving 110% in Every Zone

One of Ana’s best strategies to keep up with her dual roles is applying zone-based focus. She stays in the present and gives her 100% wherever she is. “I love the concept of place borderline: place changed, the focus changed – I use it, and it works for me. I am a full-time mom at home and a full-time career woman at the office, preoccupied wholly with my tasks as a software developer. But, once I am at home, I fully commit my time, energy, and focus to my precious ones.” Ana explained. With the two toddlers being under 5 years old, she wants to make sure that their golden period for child development is cherished and guided under her wings whenever she is around them.

Her zone-based focus strategy has helped her reduce the feeling of mom’s guilt and improved her work-life satisfaction and balance.

Keeping Sanity in Check

As Ana prioritises both, she has to wear many hats: the mother, the wife, the developer, the teacher, the caregiver, the cook, the family manager, the cleaner, and the list goes on. With many roles to do, it’s easy to lose a grip on oneself.

To keep her sanity in check, Ana always makes some time to fill up her cup. She believes that to show up wholly, she should be full of herself first. She wakes up earlier in the morning to have some me time by savouring every sip of hot cocoa in complete serenity before waking up the kids. The essential blissful ritual helps her to center her mind and heart before unfolding her day. In the evening, she lets herself loose by streaming movies and chatting with her husband over dinner when the kids are already asleep.

Other than that, she socializes with other colleagues beyond her 7 to 4 to decompress. “I join Mitrais badminton club regularly on Wednesdays and my family encourages it. I sometimes take my kids there with me. My husband and I would like to teach them that it’s good to make time for fun while maintaining our health.” said Ana. She’s grateful that Mitrais makes it easy to immerse in a like-minded community such as her badminton club, so she did not have to search further.

Ana’s journey through motherhood and career depicts the possibility for women to fulfill their maternal role and professional goal at the same time when they are given the right support from both worlds.
