Why should girls and women be given equal opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)?
As the digital world races toward automation and artificial intelligence, its success relies on diverse, skilled talents that bring fresh perspectives and work together to solve complex challenges. Hence, women’s involvement in STEM is key to advancing innovation.
Believing in equal chance to learn and work in STEM, Mitrais has been supporting programs that help the younger generation, especially women, build their skills and confidence in technology. That’s why we enthusiastically welcomed the invitation to collaborate with SheCodes Society Binus, an initiative by Binus International University that empowers girls and women through STEM workshops, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
Collaboration in Action
Held back in August at SMA PIRI 1 Yogyakarta, SheCodes Society Goes to School brought together educators, professionals, and students for an engaging series of talks. The three-day event centred around women’s roles in the fast-growing tech world.
Mitrais was proudly represented by Apriliana Nur Rahmawati, a brilliant female Analyst Programmer and Riyan Permadi, Mitrais’ Talent Partner Manager.
Role Model: Seeing is Believing
What makes one think, “Yes, I can do that too!”?
Girls and young women need to see role models to picture themselves in their shoes. Hence, representation in STEM is powerful in breaking stereotypes that STEM is an exclusively male domain.
On Day 1, Apriliana, having manifested a successful career in the tech industry, shared her personal journey. She spoke candidly about her 12 years of experience in tech, including overcoming challenges, continuous learning, and finding motivation through teamwork. As intended by SheCodes Society, her story encouraged many students to believe in their potential and reminded them that success in technology starts with confidence and persistence.
Insights from the Tech Industry
On Day 3, Riyan Permadi delivered an insightful session on career development, equal opportunities, and the growing importance of AI in the modern workplace, moderated by a policy panel discussion with the stakeholders. He shared visions of how inclusivity and technology go hand in hand because innovation works best when everyone has a chance to contribute. Inputs from this panel will be proposed to policymakers to consider the importance of equal opportunity for women in tech.
Throughout the event, students enthusiastically engaged in discussions with Mitrais representatives and Binus University educators. Also, Mitrais’ involvement in both panel sessions and policy discussions helped bring valuable insights about the future of women in tech.
