Treat Heavy Equipment Tyres As An Asset To Beat The Shortage
03 June 2007

Users of heavy equipment tyres are being urged to treat them as assets as a way of meeting the current supply shortage.

Speaking at a recent seminar in Bali, Tom Klinge founder of the global leader in tyre management Klinge & Co said earlier optimism for an end to the shortage of tyres had collapsed.

“The shortage will most likely continue to 2011 and beyond. This is the consensus on when supply will catch up to demand. It is particularly true of the larger tyres. Although key suppliers are increasing production capacity new operations and expansions are still outpacing them,” Mr. Klinge said.

Manager Product, Services and Support for Klinge, Miles Rigney, told seminar delegates the current environment reinforces the need to think about tyres as an asset rather than a consumable.

“Tyres represent a major cost factor in the haulage activity and these costs can be effectively reduced through proper management of a number of key parameters and processes,” he said.

Safety is another critical area of tyre management.  Based on its extensive research into tyre related incidents and fatalities, Klinge also provided seminar participants with some key tips on safety including the use the revolutionary new two-piece bolt down locking ring which helps to eliminate one of the major causes of accidents and fatalities in tyre maintenance activities.

As the sponsor of the seminar, Mitrais’ Brian Erickson commented, “Purpose designed processes for management of tyres, including software systems, are critical to the current mining operations. By partnering with Klinge and Co, Mitrais has extended its services to the mining sector in Indonesia with targeted solutions to an important problem area.”
