IMPROVING IT GRADUATE SKILLS
23 July 2006

The considerable gap between the real world needs of Indonesia's IT industry and the proficiency of newly graduated IT students from the nation's universities continues to be a major cause of concern for prominent software executive, Dr Maria Lantu.

The Vice-President of Software Development at leading IT group, Mitrais, Dr Lantu says that in this time of fierce global technological competition, Indonesia's IT graduates need to enter the workforce with much better developed skills in three key areas, namely: interpersonal communication (including English), problem solving and leadership abilities: a complete grasp of engineering and project management processes; and, first rate technical skills.

Dr Lantu stressed these three important qualities recently when delivering an industry lecture to graduates of the Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya: Electronics, Telecommunications, Information Technology and Industrial Electrical (PENS ITS).Her lecture was part of Mitrais' ongoing commitment to its competency development program aimed at better preparing Indonesia's IT graduates to meet the real-world demands of their future careers.

Dr Lantu told the PENS ITS class that it was essential for them to keep up with rapidly rising world competency standards if they wanted to compete in the now globalised supply of knowledge workers.

She emphasized the importance of sound interpersonal communication skills to international IT companies such as Mitrais that frequently structure projects around multi-member, multi-cultural teams and where English is often the group's lingua franca. The ability to think critically and creatively was also a very valuable attribute for young graduates coming into this type of work place environment, Dr Lantu said.

Additionally, graduates needed a good understanding of project management and engineering processes in addition to world class technical competency in their chosen field of expertise, she said.

Dr Lantu shared with the PENS ITS graduates some real-life examples from her work at Mitrais of how soft skills play an essential part in meeting the everyday challenges of IT project development. She encouraged the graduates to truly understand their own individual strengths and weaknesses then grab every opportunity to improve their soft skills and to proactively manage and overcome the many challenges they will inevitably face in their future jobs.

She concluded the seminar by saying, "At Mitrais, we firmly believe that Indonesian IT graduates have the fundamental talent and potential to successfully compete with their rivals from around the world provided they receive ongoing world-class professional education, training and mentoring; which is the reason I came to Surabaya to talk to you today".
